"Nightmares in Red, White and Blue: The Evolution of the American Horror Film"

I watched this documentary just recently. Seemed very fitting for the July 4th weekend. It covers pretty much the entire history of American horror, from the early 1900s to the late 2000s.

Horror and sci-fi veteran Lance Henriksen (Alien) narrates this fascinating look at the history of the American horror film, examining the earliest monster movies of the silent era up to the scariest modern-day masterpieces. Highlights include interviews with genre masters John Carpenter, Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, George Romero.

It's really interesting to see how the culture at the time shaped the content of the movies. Whether the writers/directors had a political message in mind or not, the cultural attitudes of the day shaped the style of horror films differently in each decade. There were phases of gothic monsters, sci-fi creatures, human deviants, campy slashers, and torture porn. So many classic movies are mentioned, I was continually saying, "Oh, now I want to watch that movie... oh, and that one too!"

Those of you with Netflix memberships can watch it instantly. Or if Hulu is your flavor, it's available there too for free.
