So as the title says, I have the keyless chuck on my Dremel Flex Shaft attachment, and last year it worked great when it was new, but i did notice towards the last few carves, when I would change the bits out, it seemed like that as the chuck teeth got closer to biting down on the drill bit, it would also seem to be harder to really tighten it down. I noticed little to no change in RPM's from the actual Dremel itself, so I figured "meh" about it... I JUST started to carve a new pattern out, and it's really the first time in quite a while I've fired it up, and i usually turn it on a lower setting just to let the motor run a few reps for about 20 seconds... When I flipped the switch, all I got was a groaning noise, and the bit was not turning at all. I shut it down instantly so as not to kill the motor, but I started going through my list of troubleshooting ideas, and it basically came down to me noticing that with the keyless chuck loose, the flex shaft turns totally fine, even at high RPM's. totally normal operation. But, when the chuck is tightened down (I work with relatively small bits, so it's darn near as tight as it will go anyway) the thing binds up to the point of causing failure in operation. This seems to happen with most of my smaller size bits, so we're talking about smaller thank 1/32nd
If I were to just kick it on a higher RPM setting, it seems to run, but you can tell it's struggling, and after about 30 seconds, the keyless chuck starts to smoke because of the friction, so I shut it off to avoid fusing the friggin thing together, and being screwed royally.
I'm wondering if there is a keyless chuck designed for these smaller diameter bits, so as to avoid the flex shaft tightening down so deep on the threads of the collet key adapter.
Has anyone had this happen to them, and if so, what was the fix? I'm considering buying a new keyless chuck, or reverting back to the original collet keys until I can find a solution. I THINK it may be an aftermarket keyless chuck from eBay, but I need to check my history first. I thought it came packaged in a Dremel brand store hanger case, but I know I bought some other Dremel brand equipment as well, so I may be confused.
I feel like Stoney or Doh might have some really helpful insight
EDIT: After some fairly quick research I have discovered, it seems, that the keyless chuck adapter is advertised for bits 1/8 - 1/32, so I'm thinking this is the root of my problem since what I'm using right now for tiny tiny details are some of the smallest little drill bits I have ever seen ranging in size from .5mm to 3mm.
